I'm currently playing and really enjoying Downwell. It's a simple yet, endlessly enjoyable game, that is coming out at just the right time for me.
In Downwell, you play as a character who is falling down a well and must avoid the many dangerous creatures and objects waiting to bring a premature end to your journey down. It's simple, fast, incredibly fun, and brutally hard all in one and marks a wonderful break from much of the things I have been playing of late.
Indeed, a major reason that Downwell is hitting the spot for me is what has come before it this year. After waiting months for Uncharted 4 and then finally experiencing such a grand, epic, and moving game I felt in the mood for something a bit lighter and simpler, enter Ratchet and Clank.
I loved Ratchet and got lost in it's goofy and silly world, but after finishing that I had this urge to go to something even smaller, even more basic and simple, which finally led me to Downwell. It's pure, joyous gameplay and right now after all the grandeur and narrative impact of Uncharted and Drake's farewell, and after all the work of launching my own website, I just wanted something easy and simple and Downwell is perfect for that.
I am enjoying the game far more then I ever expected too and it marks a welcome return to basics for me and games right before all the craziness and promise of E3 next week. I don't know how long I will play Downwell for, I don't know if I will ever finish the game, or if I will go back to it once I put it down, but right now at this moment in time it's one of those wonderful moments where a game perfectly matches with how you feel and what your wanting and that's all I really need.
